On the road again...

[livejournal.com profile] lasarina is currently undergoing the last planned preoperative test. She has already been evaluated by Kindred, and we have been informed that she will return to the LTAC as soon as all the paperwork is in order, which will be likely tomorrow or Saturday. Then it's going to be "sit and wait" for a surgery date to be scheduled. That will likely be after the New Year starts.

Rant over. Return to your original broadcast, already in progress.

ETA: Never mind. The test didn't happen and the schedule is in a state of flux again. I really wish these people understood the impact they have on real folks lives when they equivocate like this.

What's next on the agenda

First, we all need to wish [livejournal.com profile] lasarina a very happy birthday today! I am far too much the gentleman to say how old she is, so don't even ask!

And now that the staph infection is coming under control, and her probable surgery date is therefore after the New Year, we've been told that [livejournal.com profile] lasarina will probably have to go back to the LTAC for the remainder of this year. It's an issue of "not sick enough to stay at acute care hospital" under insurance guidelines for that interim. We don't know exactly when that will happen, but it's most likely going to be sometime next week. So, really, nothing surprising in that.

She did get some really good news last night though. Her surgeon dropped by ... )

Women and children first?

I seemed to upset a few people recently by getting worked up about the Beauty and the Bike campaign after it did the rounds on twitter. Cut for LJ )

My point is that the current method of asking people who don't cycle what's best for cyclists is about as useful as asking a vegan how he would prefer his steak in the belief that will make him start eating meat. Rather than asking girls who don't cycle why they don't, how about asking girls who do cycle why they do? The main barrier to cycling isn't external. The roads do not make it impossible to ride. What to do with your hair is not an insurmountable problem. If this were the case there wouldn't be anyone out there on the roads at all. The very fact that we already have female cyclists riding on the roads means that the major problem is cultural rather than practical. It's a mental, not a physical one.

It's not the infrastructure. It's the culture. It's the fuckwit drivers who believe the myth of road tax and treat non-motorised road users as moving obstacles.

And don't call me stupid.

Moving again sometime today

[livejournal.com profile] lasarina has been upgraded to a status that "no longer meets the criteria for the unit" and will thus move back to a regular floor sometime today. There is another test they want to do today as well, but the outcome of that won't affect her move out of IMU.

Barbara update

Moving to MIMU (Medical Intermediate Unit, one step off of ICU) today after stat CT of abdomen and stat chest x-ray. Gram positive sepsis. Source undetermined as of yet. CT to rule out another intestinal rupture. May also be PICC infection.

Situation not critical, but definitely no longer stable either. Prayers, etc please.

ETA: She will be in MIMU Bed 1 if you want to send e-greetings.

Barbara update - minor setback

Barbara ([info - livejournal.com] lasarina) woke up around 7 am to a fever of 103.7, pulse 161, BP 138/70. She was shivering uncontrollably, and complaining of chills. Rapid response team got the situation under control in a little over an hour. Thought for a while she was headed to ICU, but she's still in the same room. The immediate crisis has been averted, but she is still running a fever of around 102. They've taken blood cultures.

We suspect PICC line infection, which is a common side affect of TPN. Started two IV antibiotics (Vanco and one other I'm not familiar with). That puts surgery out of the question for probably at least another week. Sometimes it seems like the old saw of "Two steps forward, one step back" has it reversed. This feels like it's going to be one of those days.

Thanks to everyone for the e-cards. They have helped lift her spirits a lot.
